My whole life I have done work that has, in some small way, connected me to the lives of the people I have met along the way. In my younger years I was a Baker/Cake decorator. I made the fantastic treats that helped others celebrate the high points in life. Births, baptisms, birthdays, graduations, promotions, championships, engagements, marriages and all the other big events that can happen in a life time.

Now, as a glass artist, one of my series is in the genre of Funerary Urns. Not just urns, but works of art that are meant to be displayed for all to see and admire. It is my goal for these “Urns” to be viewed by a stranger as a beautiful work of art, not realizing what the true function is or whose final resting place it is. A work of art that just happens to have a function as well.

Years ago as I was traveling through Europe I happened into a few graveyards and was amazed by the art used by people to adorn the graves of loved ones. It was like walking through an outdoor art exhibit and I had never seen anything like it in the US. Then while in a Roman museum in the south of France I came upon blown glass urns used by the Romans over 2000 years ago.  I was stunned. For centuries people had made a big deal of remembering their ancestors and I wondered why we had stopped. From this experience came the germ of an idea to create a line of Funerary Art Urns’ a Personal Temple for the ones we love. The way you honor a loved one’s life is as important as how they lived it. Give them a resting place that is as unique and memorable as they were.
